Cheat, liar, convicted by your own words!" Words that rang fear into the heart of every child who watched this movie as a three-part series in 1964 on Disney's "Wonderful World of Color". Aired on three consecutive Sunday nights, these were the words spoken by the fearsome Scarecrow before he hanged a traitor. Hanged a traitor on Disney? Yep. Originally filmed on location outside the Disney studios, this is the rarest of the Disney films made at Pinewood studios in England. Originally filmed as three one hour episodes, in 1962, it was cut to 94 minutes and released to British theaters in 1963
and titled "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" In 1964 it was released to American television under the same title in its original three parts. A new version was released to American theaters in 1975 titled "Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow. This was basically the British version with the press gang scenes restored(they were cut from the British version for of fear of offending the British) This version was 98 min. Finally it was released to home video in 1992 This was the version seen on TV, with some cuts to bring the runtime to 129 min. This is the version here. It stars Patrick McGoohan (Secret Agent, The Prisoner) as Christopher Syn, a mild mannered Vicar, with a secret alter ego. The time is 1775,(not 1736 as early Disney press releases stated), and the people are being taxed beyond their means. To help the poor, in steps the Scarecrow a kind of Robin Hood and Zorro combined. The movie is well directed and the acting is top-notch. The plot will keep you glued to your seat for the entire film, as it never drags. This is my favorite Disney movie. Disney announced this much-requested video would be released on DVD in 2005. It was later postponed to 2006, then 2007. Again it is scheduled for release in Nov. 2008, but who knows? This is an original VHS rip The quality is good, but not great, since the tape had been played many times.
